In June, thirty-five students, from 14 different electrical, mechanical and sheetmetal companies, graduated from the inaugural Leadership Access Institute© which began August 2014. The class met nine times over the course of almost a year, and discussed topics ranging from communication skills to negation to problem solving. The last class and graduation ceremony took place at Unser Racing in Denver and provided an opportunity for students to celebrate with peers and leaders and participate in several go-cart races.
The Academy was created by the Colorado Association of Mechanical and Plumbing Contractor (CAMPC), the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Colorado Chapter and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning National Association (SMACNA) Colorado Chapter – known as the MEP Alliance – to offer a local option for member companies to educate up-and-coming management/leadership in the MEP fields about how to become effective leaders by improving their skills in 10 different areas:
• Communication skills, theory and critical conversations
• Organizational cultures and change
• Strategic negotiation skills
• Dynamics of group interaction
• Problem identification and problem solving
• Developing relationships, team building and managing workplace conflict
• Group facilitation processes
• BEST – Briefing, Educational and Speaking Techniques
• Experiential leadership

Richard Barnes & Associates, LLC, a labor relations consulting firm which provides representation, dispute resolution services, dispute resolution systems design, workforce training and development and leadership coaching to a cross-section of industry, labor, private, public and service organizations, both nationally and internationally.
